Target group

Students interested in Musicology research. In line with the profile of the Giessen Institute, a special focus is placed on contemporary music, on systematic components as well as on popular music. The students have the opportunity to choose between cultural science-oriented subjects such as Historical Musicology, Systematic Musicology and Popular Music and Media.

Annotation

The Master's course subject Musicology is research-oriented. Through its integration in the multi-subject structure of the multi-subject Master's course in History and Cultural Studies, the course provides the knowledge, skills and methods for understanding music in a broad sociocultural context.

Admission requirements

The following Bachelor's degrees are recognised as qualifications for admission to the Master's degree course:
- Musicology
- Music Education
- History and Cultural Studies with Musicology or Music Education as a major subject
The following academic qualifications are also recognised as meeting the admission requirements:
- Teaching Qualification for Grammar Schools with Music as a major subject
- Cultural Studies with Music as a major subject
- Media Studies with Music as a major subject

The Examination Committee can recognise further courses of study on a case by case basis and, if necessary, an additional entrance test as equivalent.

Language requirements: Proof of two foreign languages is required. Proof is to be provided as for the Bachelor’s degree. The regulations for these language requirements are available for downloading in the current version:
